Swallowing Assessment & VFSS Brisbane
Difficulty or discomfort swallowing including a sensation of a lump in the throat (globus) can have a real impact on daily life, and it's important to have it properly assessed. We provide swallowing assessments for adults, including videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), conducted with Radiology at Queensland X-Ray, Mater Private Hospital.
Conditions we assess and treat:
- Difficulty swallowing food, drink or tablets (dysphagia)
- Coughing, choking or a wet voice when eating or drinking
- Sensation of a lump in the throat (globus)
- Swallowing changes after stroke or with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions
- Swallowing difficulty after head and neck cancer treatment
What happens at a VFSS? You'll swallow small amounts of food and drink mixed with a contrast liquid while X-ray video shows how your swallow works. Your speech pathologist reviews the images and recommends treatment or diet changes.
A referral from your GP or specialist is required for VFSS. Once we receive your referral, we'll be in touch to arrange a suitable time and coordinate the appointment directly with Queensland X-Ray.
