Chronic Cough and Upper Airway Disorders in Brisbane

Assessment and treatment of chronic cough, throat clearing, laryngeal hypersensitivity and breathing difficulties.

A chronic cough is a cough that lasts more than eight weeks in an adult. A persistent cough or a constant need to clear your throat can be exhausting, especially when medical tests haven't found an answer, or treatment hasn't fully resolved it. Speech pathology offers a non-medication approach that treats chronic cough as a sensitised, overactive reflex that can be retrained, alongside your medical care.

Our chronic cough therapy program is grounded in current best-practice guidelines and typically works alongside your GP, respiratory specialist, laryngologist and gastroenterologist. Sessions focus on identifying your cough triggers, breathing and laryngeal control techniques, and strategies to reduce the urge to cough or clear your throat.

Conditions we treat:

  • Chronic refractory cough
  • Laryngeal hypersensitivity
  • Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO)
  • Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO)
  • Chronic throat clearing
  • Globus sensation
  • Cough hypersensitivity syndrome
